Yes, the oven needs a thorough clean at the end of a tenancy. It is one of the first things a landlord, letting agent or inventory clerk checks, and burnt-on grease is easy to spot and easy to photograph. The standard to aim for is the condition recorded in your check-in inventory: interior, door glass, racks, trays, grill pan, hob and extractor all free of grease and carbon.
Here is what “clean” means at check-out, how to get there yourself, and when it is worth handing the job to professionals.
What landlords and agents check
| Part | Expected standard | Commonly missed |
|---|---|---|
| Oven interior | Walls, floor and roof free of grease and carbon | Back wall behind the fan cover, roof of the oven |
| Door glass | Clear on both sides | Grease between the panes and on the door seal |
| Racks, shelf runners and trays | No baked-on residue | Side runners, roasting tins and grill pan |
| Grill | Grill element area and grill pan clean | Top grill in double ovens |
| Hob | Surface, pan supports, burners or rings spotless | Burner caps, under a lift-up hob, control knobs |
| Extractor hood | Canopy and filters degreased | Metal mesh filters, underside of the hood |
| Outside | Handles, controls and front panel clean | Gaps at the sides of a freestanding cooker |
Check your check-in inventory and photos first. If the oven was spotless when you moved in, that is the standard you will be held to, allowing for fair wear and tear. If it was already marked, you are not expected to return it better than you found it.
Before you start
- Check the oven type. Some ovens have catalytic liners (rough, matt panels) that clean themselves at high temperature. Do not use oven cleaner or abrasive pads on them. Pyrolytic ovens have a self-clean cycle, so run it as the manual describes and wipe out the ash afterwards.
- Protect yourself. Heavy-duty oven cleaners are caustic. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection, open windows, and keep children and pets out of the kitchen.
- Never mix products. Do not combine oven cleaner with bleach or other chemicals, and rinse thoroughly between different products.
- Make sure the oven is off and cool. Isolate it at the switch if you will be working near the element or fan.
- Allow time. A neglected oven needs a few hours, much of it waiting for products to soften grease.
How to clean an oven for end of tenancy: step by step
- Remove racks, trays and runners. Soak them in a bath or large container of very hot water with biological washing powder or a couple of dishwasher tablets. Lay an old towel in the bath to protect it from scratches. Leave them for a few hours or overnight.
- Scrape off loose carbon. Use a plastic scraper on the oven floor and door to remove loose, burnt-on lumps before applying anything.
- Apply your cleaner and let it dwell. Either a paste of bicarbonate of soda and water (leave it overnight) or a commercial oven cleaner following the label’s dwell time. Avoid the element, fan and any catalytic panels.
- Wipe away softened grease. Use a damp non-scratch scourer and plenty of clean water. Rinse the cloth often, and repeat on stubborn patches rather than scrubbing hard.
- Clean the door glass. Use a glass scraper held flat to avoid scratching, then a damp cloth. On many ovens the inner pane can be removed to clean between the panes. Check the manual first and support the glass carefully.
- Scrub the racks. After soaking, most residue comes away with a scourer. Rinse and dry them before refitting.
- Do the hob. For ceramic and induction hobs, use a hob scraper and a cream cleaner made for glass. For gas hobs, soak pan supports and burner caps, clean the burner heads with a soft brush and make sure they are fully dry before refitting.
- Degrease the extractor. Many metal mesh filters can go in the dishwasher, or soak them in hot water with washing-up liquid. Carbon filters cannot be washed and need replacing.
- Final rinse and check. Wipe every surface with clean water to remove any cleaner residue, dry it, then refit the racks. Heat the empty oven briefly with a window open to burn off any trace of product before the check-out.
DIY or professional oven cleaning?
A lightly used oven can usually be brought up to standard in an afternoon. A heavily soiled one, especially with carbon on the door glass or the back wall behind the fan, can take hours and still fall short. Professional oven cleaners use dip tanks or dedicated degreasers for the racks and remove the fan cover and door glass where safe to do so.
You can add oven and appliance cleaning to an end of tenancy clean, so the oven, fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher are all done in the same visit. These are real totals from our appliance cleaning jobs in the last 12 months:
| Property / booking | From | Average | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone appliance booking | £118 | £150 | 149 |
| Added to an end of tenancy clean (whole job) | £210 | £326 | 2,190 |
| Added to a deep clean (whole job) | £193 | £375 | 890 |

FAQs
Does the oven need cleaning for end of tenancy?
Yes. It is one of the most closely inspected items. If it is dirtier than at check-in, allowing for fair wear and tear, the landlord can deduct a reasonable cost for cleaning it from your deposit.
How clean does the oven need to be?
It should match the condition recorded in the check-in inventory. In practice that means no grease or carbon inside, clear glass, clean racks and trays, and a clean hob and extractor.
Can I use oven cleaner on every oven?
No. Do not use it on catalytic liners, and follow the manual for pyrolytic ovens and self-clean cycles. Always wear gloves, ventilate the room and never mix oven cleaner with other chemicals.
How long does a professional oven clean take?
It depends on the size of the oven and how much grease has built up. A single oven takes less time than a range cooker or double oven. Your itemised quote lists which appliances are included.
