About Shaftesbury
Shaftesbury is a town and civil parish in Dorset, on the A30, 20 miles west of Salisbury. It is administered by Dorset Council and had a population of 9,162 at the 2021 census.
The town has never had a direct railway connection; the nearest station is Gillingham, four miles away. Landmarks include Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street, and Shaftesbury Abbey, founded in 888 and dissolved in 1539. It stands about 215 metres above sea level.
